Understand your kundli
Sun sign or moon sign? What is a dasha? Should you worry about Sade Sati? Plain answers to the questions families ask us most, and a simple way to read any kundli.
How to read a kundli
Most families in North India use this diamond-shaped chart. It looks complicated, but once you know three things you can read any kundli.
The houses never move
The diamond at the top centre is always the 1st house, which is you. From there, count anticlockwise: the triangle to its upper left is the 2nd, the next one down is the 3rd, the left diamond is the 4th, and so on round to the 12th at the top right. The four big diamonds (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) are the kendras, the pillars of the chart.
The small numbers are signs
Each house has a small number in it. That number is the zodiac sign in that house: 1 Aries, 2 Taurus, 3 Gemini, 4 Cancer, 5 Leo, 6 Virgo, 7 Libra, 8 Scorpio, 9 Sagittarius, 10 Capricorn, 11 Aquarius, 12 Pisces. The number in the top diamond is your lagna.
The short names are planets
Su Sun, Mo Moon, Ma Mars, Me Mercury, Ju Jupiter, Ve Venus, Sa Saturn, Ra Rahu, Ke Ketu. 'Asc' marks the ascendant. A star (*) after a planet means it was retrograde. A planet's house tells you which area of life it works on, and the sign number tells you in what style.
The basics
What's the difference between my sun sign and my moon sign?
Your sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. Your moon sign (rashi) is the sign the Moon was in. The Sun stays in a sign for about a month, so millions of people share a sun sign. The Moon changes sign every two and a half days, so your moon sign is far more personal. In Indian astrology the moon sign matters most, because the Moon shows your mind, your feelings and how you take life's ups and downs. Dashas, Sade Sati and daily horoscopes are all counted from the Moon.
Why is my sign here different from the one in magazines?
Magazine horoscopes use the Western (tropical) zodiac, which is tied to the seasons. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the actual stars. Over centuries the two have drifted apart by about 24 degrees, almost a full sign. That gap is called the ayanamsa. So if a magazine calls you Leo, your Vedic sun sign is very likely Cancer. Neither is a mistake. They are two different ways of measuring, and this report uses the Vedic one with the Lahiri ayanamsa, which the Government of India's calendar also uses.
What is lagna (ascendant)?
Lagna is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact minute you were born. It becomes the 1st house of your chart, and every other house is counted from it. Lagna changes roughly every two hours, which is why birth time matters so much. Think of it this way: the Moon sign shows your mind, the lagna shows you as a whole, your body, nature and the direction of your life.
What is a nakshatra, and what is a pada?
The sky is divided into 27 nakshatras, or birth stars. Each one is smaller than a sign, so it describes you more finely. Your nakshatra is the one the Moon was in at birth. Each nakshatra has four quarters called padas. Your nakshatra decides where your Vimshottari dasha starts, the first letter traditionally suggested for a name, and much of the matching in kundli milan.
What are the 12 houses (bhava)?
A chart has 12 houses, and each one looks after an area of life. 1st: you and your health. 2nd: family, speech, savings. 3rd: courage and siblings. 4th: home, mother, peace of mind. 5th: children and intelligence. 6th: work, competition, daily health. 7th: marriage and partnership. 8th: sudden changes and hidden matters. 9th: luck, father, faith. 10th: career and status. 11th: income and gains. 12th: expenses, foreign lands and rest. A planet sitting in a house brings its nature into that part of your life.
What do the nine planets (navagraha) stand for?
Sun: confidence, father, government. Moon: mind, mother, emotions. Mars: energy, courage, property. Mercury: intellect, speech, business. Jupiter: wisdom, children, teachers, marriage for women. Venus: love, marriage, comfort, art. Saturn: discipline, hard work, patience, delays that teach. Rahu: ambition, foreign things, unusual paths. Ketu: detachment, spirituality, sudden breaks. No planet is purely good or bad. What matters is where it sits and how strong it is in your chart.
What does retrograde (vakri) mean?
Seen from Earth, a planet sometimes seems to move backwards for a few weeks. That's retrograde, or vakri. The planet isn't actually reversing. It's an effect of Earth overtaking it. Traditionally a retrograde planet acts in a more inward way, or brings back unfinished matters. It's common, and it isn't a bad sign on its own. In your chart it's marked with a small star (*) next to the planet.
Timing: dasha and transits
What is a dasha, and why does everyone talk about it?
Your life runs in planetary chapters called dashas. The Vimshottari system adds up to 120 years and gives each of the nine planets its own period, from 6 years (Sun) to 20 years (Venus). Inside each big chapter (mahadasha) there are smaller ones (antardasha), and inside those even smaller ones (pratyantar). Whichever planet's period is running, its houses and its nature come forward in your life. That's why the same chart can feel very different at 25 and at 45.
What is gochar (transit)?
Your birth chart is a fixed photograph. Gochar is where the planets are moving right now, compared with that photograph. Slow planets matter most: Saturn spends about two and a half years in a sign, Jupiter about a year, Rahu and Ketu about eighteen months. When the running dasha and the transits point at the same house together, that's when events in that area tend to happen.
How do you find the 'windows' in my report?
We go month by month through the coming years. For each month we check whether the running mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantar planets are connected to the house that matters (the 7th for marriage, the 10th and 6th for jobs). Then we check whether Jupiter and Saturn are both touching that house or its lord, which classical astrologers call the double transit. Months that score highest are joined into windows and graded Strong, Moderate or Building. A window means the doors are more open then. You still have to walk through them.
What exactly is Sade Sati? Should I be scared?
Sade Sati is the roughly seven and a half years when Saturn passes through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Each part lasts about two and a half years. Everyone goes through it two or three times in a lifetime, so it's completely normal. It tends to bring responsibility, slower results and hard lessons, and many people look back on it as the time they grew the most. If Saturn is strong in your chart, it usually feels lighter. Dhaiya is a shorter two and a half year Saturn phase over the 4th or 8th sign from the Moon.
What do Good, Mixed and Careful months mean?
Each month is scored from where Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu and the faster planets move compared with your Moon sign, plus how your running dasha planet is placed. Good months are your best months of the year for starting things and making decisions. Careful months are the ones to go slower, double-check paperwork and look after your health routine. Mixed months are ordinary months. The grades are relative to your own year, not a comparison with anyone else.
Marriage and matching
What is Manglik dosha, and is it really a problem?
A chart is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. By that rule nearly half of all people are Manglik in some way, so it's very common. The classical texts also list many cancellations, for example Mars in its own sign, or both partners being Manglik. We check Mars from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, and apply those cancellations. A cancelled or mild Manglik dosha is not a reason to reject a good match.
How many gunas should match? Is 18 enough?
Ashtakoota milan compares the two Moon signs and nakshatras across eight areas, worth 36 points in total. Traditionally 18 or more is acceptable, 24 or more is good, and 30 or more is excellent. But the total alone can mislead. A 26 with a Nadi problem can need more thought than a 20 without one. That's why your report explains each koota and the cancellation rules, not just the number.
What are Nadi and Bhakoot dosha?
Nadi (8 points) is about health and the next generation. If both people have the same Nadi, it scores zero and is called Nadi dosha. Bhakoot (7 points) looks at how the two Moon signs sit from each other, and certain pairs like 6-8 or 2-12 score zero. Both have well-known cancellations, for example when the Moon signs share the same lord, or when the nakshatras are the same but the padas differ. Your report tells you whether any cancellation applies.
Career and jobs
Which part of the chart shows career?
The 10th house is the main career house: your work, status and reputation. The 6th house shows service, competition and exams, which is why it matters so much for government jobs. The 11th shows income and gains. Planets connected to these houses, and the Amatyakaraka (the planet that guides your career in the Jaimini system), suggest which fields suit you.
Can a chart really say if I'll get a government job?
A chart can show whether the classical indicators for government service are present, like a strong Sun, a strong 6th and 10th house, or Jupiter in a kendra, and when the supportive periods come. It can't sit the exam for you. Think of it as knowing which seasons are good for sowing. Preparation is still the seed, and the report's windows help you plan when to push hardest.
Muhurat and business
What exactly is a muhurat, and does it really matter?
A muhurat is a time chosen so that the day and the hour both support what you are starting. Jyotish says beginnings carry the stamp of their moment, so a good start makes the road smoother. It is not a magic switch: the product, the location and your effort still decide most of the result. Think of it as starting with the wind behind you rather than against you.
What if I can't open on any of the dates?
Do a small symbolic start inside the muhurat: light a lamp at the new place, make the first entry in your account book, or take the first order. The full opening with guests can follow on another day. This is the classical way, and families have always used it when the calendar and real life don't line up.
Why are my times different from the calendar on the wall?
Two reasons. Printed calendars give times for one city, but sunrise, Rahu Kaal and the choghadiya shift by up to an hour across India, and your report uses your business city. And a wall calendar is the same for everyone, while your dates also pass checks from your own birth star and Moon sign.
Why so few good days in three months?
Because a day has to pass many checks at once: the lunar day, the weekday, the Moon's star, the yoga, the karana, your own star and your own Moon. Missing even one rules the day out. Five to ten good days in 90 is normal. Fewer, stronger dates are more useful than a long list of so-so ones.
Should the muhurat follow my chart or my partner's?
Both. Enter the person who will make the start (cut the ribbon, sign the paper, make the first sale) as the main person, and add up to 3 partners. Classically a muhurat is judged for the one who begins, so that person gets every check. Each partner is checked too: a day that is personally bad for any partner (their Chandrashtama, or the harmful Vadha tara) is dropped, and smaller minuses lower the date's rank. If few days suit everyone in 90 days, the report looks further ahead, up to six months.
Accuracy and trust
How exact does my birth time need to be?
Planet signs, the Moon sign, nakshatra, dasha and Sade Sati barely change within a few hours, so they are reliable even with an approximate time. The lagna and the houses change every two hours or so, which is where an exact time helps. If you chose morning, afternoon, evening or night instead of an exact time, we read your chart from the Moon (Chandra Lagna), a classical method for exactly this situation, and we say so clearly in the report.
Why do different astrologers tell me different things?
Usually for three reasons: they use a different ayanamsa or house system, they were given a slightly different birth time, or they weigh the same factors differently. We use one fixed, published method (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, Vimshottari dasha) and list the exact chart facts behind every statement at the end of the report. So you can show it to any astrologer and they can check it line by line.
Is my future fixed? Can I change what the chart shows?
Jyotish has always said the chart shows tendencies and timing, not a fixed script. A good period makes things easier, a hard one makes them slower, but your choices, effort and the people around you still shape what actually happens. That's why this report talks about windows and signs, never certainties.
Do I need to buy a gemstone or book a puja?
No. We only suggest free, simple remedies: the planet's weekday, a short mantra, a small act of charity (daan) and a helpful habit. They are meant to steady your mind and build good routines. Please be careful of anyone who says you must spend a lot of money to fix your chart.
What are the 'chart reasoning' notes in the report?
Every reading in your report is written only from facts our engine calculated from your birth details, like 'Jupiter rules your 7th house' or 'Saturn enters Pisces in March 2025'. Under each section you can open those facts, and the full list is printed at the end. Nothing is made up, and anything can be double-checked.
